Lost in Edition? Considerations on Some Sources of Menander’s Hypobolimaios

Abstract

In this paper, I discuss several literary and iconographic sources related to Menander’s Hypobolimaios. I compare the texts of Varro and Cicero, which refer to Caecilius’ Hypobolimaeus (Chaerestratus), with Quintilian’s text concerning the Menandrean play. Furthermore, I argue that a marble relief in Naples, a cameo in Geneva, and the decoration of a silver cup from the Boscoreale treasure can be associated with Menander’s Hypobolimaios.
