Through a look at the practice of the sitonia, I intend to show what limits are imposed to the vision of a planned policy settled up by Athens to regulate its own corn supply during the fourth century B.C. Although more widely attested in later times, the act of buying public grain by city’s officers makes its first appearance in the last three decades of the century and puts delicate issues of jurisdiction which will be analyzed here briefly. I will discuss the exceptional nature of the practice and the sources of its own funding, that are almost always depending from the private generosity.
