Abstract

The essay reviews Umberto Artioli’s works detecting two complementary factors throughout them: the impatience of unchallengeable critical axioms and the tendency to uncover hidden, “underground” motifs in the works of the dramatists and theatre theoreticians Artioli chose to investigate. Degli Esposti reads these two components as complementary factors in Artioli’s critical perspective, maintaining the impossibility to exhaust all possible critical interpretations of an issue was for him both the main attraction and the basis of scientific research.
